E-2 Visa for Korean Investors

South Korea is the third-largest source of E-2 Treaty Investor Visa holders globally, with approximately 6,800 visas issued annually (FY2024) — dramatic growth from fewer than 2,000 a decade ago. Korean nationals have E-2 treaty access through a treaty in force since 1956, and the Korean-American business community — particularly in the Pacific Northwest, Los Angeles, and New York — is one of the most active E-2 investor communities in the United States. Watson Immigration Law serves Korean investors across the United States from its Seattle base.

Treaty Status & History

South Korea and the United States have maintained a Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation since 1957. Korean nationals have full E-2 treaty access, and the program has seen dramatic growth — from fewer than 2,000 annual issuances a decade ago to approximately 6,800 today (FY2024). This growth reflects Korean entrepreneurs' increasing appetite for U.S. business investment, particularly in technology, retail, and the service sector.

Visa Validity for Korean Nationals

Korean nationals receive a 5-year visa stamp. Each entry into the United States on E-2 status is typically for a 2-year period, renewable indefinitely. There is no limit on extensions as long as the underlying qualifying investment remains active.

Common Investment Sectors for Korean E-2 Investors

Korean investors in the United States most commonly invest in technology-oriented service businesses, Korean-American retail and restaurant operations, franchise businesses, and import/export companies. In the Pacific Northwest, the presence of Microsoft, Amazon, and other tech employers creates a strong market for Korean-owned IT consulting and staffing firms. Korean-owned franchise operations — particularly in food service — are also extremely common E-2 structures.

Seoul Consulate Processing

E-2 applications for Korean nationals are processed at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. The Seoul Embassy handles a very high volume of E-2 applications and has extensive experience with Korean investor cases. Processing times after interview are typically 2–4 weeks. Korean-language support is available at the embassy, but all application documents must be submitted in English or with certified translation.

Seattle & the Pacific Northwest for Korean Investors

Seattle has one of the most established Korean-American business communities in the United States, anchored by the Bellevue and Lynnwood corridors. The Pacific Northwest's proximity to Seoul (direct flights, Pacific Rim trade ties) and the presence of major tech employers that employ Korean nationals make this market particularly active for Korean E-2 investors. Watson Immigration Law is deeply familiar with the specific business environments and investment opportunities that Korean investors encounter in this region.
